History of the Hospital

Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1880, Saint Joseph’s facility is Atlanta's oldest hospital. Father James O'Brien, the pastor of Immaculate Conception parish, was responsible for Atlanta's first permanent hospital. He bought property in the early 1880's on the present Courtland Street for the Sisters of Mercy for a Catholic Hospital first known as the Atlanta Hospital, later as St. Joseph's Infirmary and today as Saint Joseph's Hospital..
