Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth & Young Adult Celebration
Mission
Youth and Young Adults sharing their artistic talents in joyful celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday and creating awareness of his impact on all youth and young adults, past, present and future.
Goals
- Create a sense of reverence and gratitude for the life of Dr. King.
- Demonstrate how Dr. King's thoughts, words and actions transcend all barriers – age, race and time.
- Explore Dr. King's impact on the lives of youth and young adults and how to continue to make his teachings present today.
- Educate youth and young adults about social action organizations they can join to effect positive change in society.
- Educate the youth and young adults about issues such as abortion, HIV/AIDS, and pregnancy according to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
- Encourage young adults to register to vote and be aware of their civic duties locally and nationally, through voter registration drives and voter education programs.
- Create an initiative in response to a social justice issue in our community, like homelessness, poverty or racism.
The 2004 MLK Youth & Young Adult Celebration Social Action Initiative
Because 40-50 thousand individuals in Metro Atlanta experience homelessness each year, the youth and young adults collected warm clothing and blankets to respond to the immediate needs of Atlanta’s homeless through their ‘Warm Nights’ Clothing and Blanket Drive.
The clothing drive was a wonderful success. The Boy and Girl Scouts of St. Anthony’s diligently stood in the narthex of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, on both Saturday and Sunday to collect and sort clothing and blankets. It was great to see the youth making an effort to affect positive change in the lives of others less fortunate than themselves. The Office for Black Catholic Ministry took 6 carts full of coats and blankets to the Atlanta Women and Children Day shelter and 2 carts of coats to the Charitable Ministries on Courtland.
