-

-

Annual Black Catholic Leadership Recognition/Education Scholarship Banquet
Offices for Black Catholic Ministry, in a number of dioceses, sponsor these types of banquets. They generally have a twofold purpose. One is to affirm the achievements of Black Catholics in the community, and/or to underscore the civic and human value of their contributions therein. Another is for fundraising in support of Black Catholic education. The planning, and successful execution of these fundraising banquets, are good confidence- building experiences for Black Catholics. Additionally, they are excellent opportunities for Black Catholics to interact in a professional and business-like way with the business community, affording another opportunity to dispel those unfortunate stereotypical myths about Blacks in general, and Black Catholics in particular.
Too little is known about Black Catholics in both the Black and White Atlanta communities. Even less is known about the breadth and depth of their leadership status, and contributions in both the public and private sectors. Far less is known of those heroic and saintly acts of Catholic Christian Discipleship among any number of parishioners, who, like St. Theresa, the Little Flower, do the ordinary thing so extra-ordinarily well. This type event would hopefully enable a better understanding of the Catholic Christian Witness to our Protestant brothers and sisters.
Finally, it is hoped that this and similar types of events would serve to celebrate and further encourage Black Catholics’ involvement in civic, business, and eleemosynary life and leadership, and most importantly in Church life.
