Prison and Jail Ministry

Mission Statement:

The Prison and Jail Ministry is called to serve the Archbishop as he responds to Matthew 25:36, 40, by providing support, sharing of resources and training opportunities to all who minister to those incarcerated in prisons and jails in the Archdiocese of Atlanta.

Matthew 25:36, 40: "I was in prison and you came to visit me...I will assure you, as often as you did it for one of my least brothers, you did it for me."

Purpose/Goals in the Archdiocese of Atlanta:

  • Provide recruitment, training and support for all prison and jail ministers and volunteers.
  • Stand in solidarity with others involved in activities involving capital punishment. This may include executions and those events that are a part of the execution process.
  • Work with clergy and volunteers to help resolve issues relative to prison and jail ministry.
  • Provide an advocacy forum for clergy and volunteers ministering in prisons and/or jails.
  • Network with organizations on the local and national level, including but not limited to Kairos, Georgians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, Knights of Malta, Georgia Prison Ministries Project, CMN (Catholic Mobilizing Network).
  • Maintain database to aid in establishing a Catholic presence in jails and prisons. This database includes pertinent information that will be utilized to help clergy and volunteers in the prison and/or ministry.
  • Travel to parishes, deaneries, schools and other Catholic gatherings to provide training on church teachings relative to the death penalty.
  • Provide sacramental preparation and spiritual direction to inmates on Georgia's Death Row.
