Latest From Archbishop Gregory's Georgia Bulletin Column, "What I have Seen and Heard"-“ I should know better by now, but I felt personally offended by a recent news article that purported to describe Pope John Paul II’s practice of self-mortification. The author wrote that the late Holy Father frequently slept on the floor of his bedroom and occasionally engaged in the practice of self-flagellation, alleging, “He whipped himself with a belt!” The author’s cavalier attitude ridiculed the Pope’s penitential routine and seemed to insinuate that he was weird if not deranged because of the practices. The headlines were intended to capture your attention and not to explain the religious habits of a man who still enjoys the admiration of countless millions of people the world over” Read the rest of the article...
Young Adult Ministry (YAM’s) mission is to connect single and married young adults, ages 18-40, with Jesus, the Catholic Church and one another through spiritual, social and service opportunities. As one of the oldest, biggest and most active YAM programs in the United States, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.
For example, during the season of Lent, young adults are invited to participate in their Wednesday night Holy Grounds gatherings, titled When the Desert Feels Longer Than 40 Days. YAM is also looking to actively spread the word about the 2011 World Youth Day in Madrid.

My name is Deacon Thomas Zahuta from St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Kennesaw, GA. I am in my last semester of seminary at Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, MD. I look forward in anticipation of returning permanently to Atlanta and with great joy to become a priest of Jesus Christ and his Church.
-Rev. Mr. Thomas Zahuta
Now to him who is able to accomplish far more than all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen (Eph 3:20-21).

As Lent draws near, we are faced with an opportunity to reflect and repent. It is a time to prepare for and celebrate the death and ressurection of Jesus. For example, many of the Archdiocesan staff will participate in an annual Lenten Day of Reflection at the Catherdal and in Annual Chancery Lenten Lunches, which draw on resources from Catholic Relief Services’ Operation Rice Bowl program and provides staff with an opportunity to share in meal and learn about our brothers and sisters around the world. Find out what’s going on in your parish or community during this season of lent. Some activities may include Stations of the Cross, a Lenten Mission or a Lenten Penance Service. We wish you much grace and peace during this season of Lent.

Response to the Haitian Earthquake-
Parishes and schools within the Archdiocese of Atlanta have raised over a million dollars for Haiti relief efforts. A few parishes, in fact, have already been working with communities in Haiti before the earthquake hit, including St. Monica’s and St. George. While ongoing support is needed (click here to donate), we want to recognize the love and generosity our Catholic community has shown towards the people of Haiti.
The Archdiocese of Atlanta has a Spanish Catholic Radio program on La Bonita 610AM called Nuestra Fe. Nuestra Fe is on the air from 10-11am Monday through Friday and the Mass is aired live each Sunday at 10:00am. Nuestra Fe is focused on bringing the Catholic message of God to the homes and hearts of our rapidly growing and diverse Hispanic population. To learn more, contact Jairo Martinez.
