About the Collections
The collections consist mainly of the records of the Archdiocese of
Atlanta. The materials span 1822-2001. Since Atlanta did not become its
own diocese until 1956, the bulk of materials date from that year.

Contains official documents, biographical material, correspondence, and reports of the bishop and archbishops of Atlanta. [1956- ] |
Archdiocesan Councils, etc. |
Records of the various archdiocesan councils, commissions, boards, and committees; including the Pastoral Council, Synod of 1966, Finance Council, and Board of Consultors. |
Archdiocesan Departments |
Files of the various offices and departments of the Archdiocese, including the Archbishops office, Office of Education, Finance Department, Office of Religious Education, Catholic Social Services, Catholic Construction Services, Pro-Life Office, Office of Family Concerns, Development office, and various apostalates. |
Archdiocesan Agencies |
Contains files pertaining to various groups, such as Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and Knights of Columbus. |
Non-Archdiocesan Agencies |
Correspondence, reports, and publications concerning national and international committees and organizations, including the Catholic Extension Society and the Society for the Propogation of the Faith. Almost half of the series consists of files relating to the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. |
Parishes and Missions |
Files on parishes and missions created by offices of the Archdiocese. May Include correspondence, decrees of establishment, boundaries, financial reports, parish histories, photographs, annual reports (1956-1966), pastoral appointments, building proposals, and some parish newsletters/bulletins (1993-present, not for all parishes). [1936- ] |
Subject Files |
Correspondence, memoranda, reports, and publications on various topics that do not fit into any other series. Files created by the Archbishops office. |
Campus Ministry |
Information on overall campus ministry program for the Archdiocese and on each specific campus program. |
Institutions |
Records relating to various institutions, including the Catholic University of America, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home, and the Village of St. Joseph. |
Catholic Schools |
Contains correspondence about finances, salaries, construction, and special problems; reports, publications (includes some yearbooks), and photographs. The only student records are for St. Joseph High School, 1961-1976 (these files are restricted). [1951- , bulk 1960- ] |
Campaigns |
Records relating to various archdiocesan fund raising activities, including the Archbishops Annual Appeal. [1959-1998] |
Religious Orders |
Files with correspondence and reports, mostly concerning religious orders (both men and women) that had a presence in the Archdiocese. |
Archdiocesan Properties |
Includes records (correspondence, surveys, appraisals, deeds) relating to property sold by Archdiocese. [1959- ] |
Publications |
Includes bound volumes of the archdiocesan newspaper Georgia Bulletin (1963-present), school yearbooks (not all schools or years), Clergy newsletter (1989-present), Chancery newsletter (1979-1982), Datebook (1979-1989) the Official Catholic Directory (1983-present), Saint Anthonys Parish News (1932-1962), various department and organization newsletters, Catholic periodicals (years and titles vary), and the archives book collection. |
