Good Friday Pilgrimage
Begins at Georgia State Capitol

ATLANTA — People of all faiths will pray, sing and reflect upon today's social justice issues as they listen to community leaders connect current issues with the sufferings endured by Christ in his passion and death. The Most Reverend Wilton D. Gregory, Archbishop of Atlanta, will open the 31st Annual Good Friday Pilgrimage with prayer at 9 a.m. on the steps of (1) the Georgia State Capitol, 206 Washington Street, Atlanta, on Friday, April 22.

Each Station of the Cross is celebrated before the buildings in downtown Atlanta that best exemplify in modern form the object of Christ's passion. The journey continues from the State Capitol to the (2) Seas Historic Marker on Washington and Mitchell Streets (City Hall) on to (3) Trinity United Methodist Church, 265 Washington St. S.W. The next station will be at (4) Fulton County Family Court, 185 Central Ave. S.W. and on to the (5) Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 48 MLK Jr. Dr. S.W., and continue to (6) Atlanta History Wall Plaza at the corner of Peachtree Center/Central Ave. and Decatur St. The next station will be at (7) Hurt Park in front of the United Way Building, 100 Edgewood Ave., and then on to (8) Freedom Quilt Memorial, 92 Piedmont Ave. The pilgrimage will continue to (9) the grassy lot across from John Calhoun Park, 170 Auburn at Piedmont, then on to (10) John Wesley Dobbs Plaza/Park. The next stop will be (11) the Amphitheatre at the corner of Jackson St. NE and Auburn Ave. NE. The group will walk to (12) the Georgia Justice Project, 438 Edgewood Ave. and then on to (13) Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 25 Blvd. NE, and ends at approximately 1 p.m. at the (14) Rev. Dr. MLK Jr. and Coretta Scott King Grave Sites at 413 Auburn Avenue. A bus will be provided for those who want a ride back to the State Capitol.

Reflections on each Station of the Cross will be offered in a variety of languages including English, Spanish, Swahili, Chinese, Polish, Indonesian, Italian, Creole, Vietnamese, Portuguese, and French.

"What makes our Atlanta Good Friday Pilgrimage unique is its remembrance of Christ's passion expressed in modern form before the urban buildings that represent the perpetrators of Christ's passion and the current justice issues that today cause the suffering of Christ," commented Dr. Heidi Tauscher, Director of Parish and Social Justice Ministries for the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Dr. Tauscher may be reached at htauscher@archatl.com or 404-920-7897.

The media are invited to attend any part of the Good Friday Pilgrimage. For more information, contact Pat Chivers at pchivers@archatl.com or 678-480-6865.
