Mass of Thanksgiving for Bishop-Elect Hartmayer, New Bishop of Savannah Diocese

Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory and Bishop Zarama will preside over a special Mass of Thanksgiving for Bishop-elect Gregory Hartmayer, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 1st at the Cathedral of Christ the King, 2699 Peachtree Road N.E., Atlanta, Georgia 30305.

Bishop-elect Hartmayer is a member of the Conventual Franciscans and is only the second priest from the religious order to serve as bishop in the United States in the last 100 years. Archbishop Gregory states, "Our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has chosen an outstanding priest and pastor from our Archdiocese to serve as the next Bishop of Savannah. He will bring with him the great spiritual heritage of St. Francis of Assisi and the pastoral experience to be a zealous and effective shepherd for the church in South Georgia. Fr. Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM. Conv. has been a respected member of the Presbyterate of the Archdiocese of Atlanta for more than sixteen years and he has won the esteem and affection of the clergy, religious, and faithful of this local Church."

The announcement of Pope Benedict XVI's appointment of Fr. Hartmayer as Bishop-elect of Savannah, Georgia was made on July 19th. His Episcopal Ordination will take place in Savannah at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Tuesday, October 18th, 2011.
