The new English translation of the Third Edition of the Roman Missal will go into effect on November 27, 2011, with musical settings available even sooner! An ongoing process of preparation is underway in the Archdiocese of Atlanta for the reception of the new translation. Effective preparation for the new translation will not only provide for a smoother transition, but will help Catholics to understand the mass more deeply, and to participate in the sacred liturgy with the devout and active participation called for by the Second Vatican Council. Timeline
Implementation Timeline (Original) - Schedule for new translation catechesis from Fall 2010. Does not account for music permissions given below.
Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan, President of the USCCB, has authorized diocesan bishops to give permission to use the musical settings from the new Missal as early as September 1.
Archbishop Gregory has granted permission to the Archdiocese of Atlanta to use the new Mass parts as early as September. The Archdiocesan Music Commission has recommended a schedule of introduction in hopes that it will be used throughout the archdiocese.
Parish Coordinators
Each Parish in the Archdiocese has appointed a parish coordinator to assist the pastor and the parish implementation team in preparing for the new translation. Contact your parish coordinator to find out what events are planned for your parish.
Events
The ODW has finished all of our formal events in preparation for the new translation, but many parishes are still hosting events. These will be available as parishes submit them.
ODW Resources The Office for Divine Worship has put together many original resources for your use, including a pre-packaged workshop on the new translation (just print, set up the projector, and go!), a video of Archbishop Gregory speaking about the new translation, an order form for discounted copies of the Missal itself, and more.
Pew Cards Everyone will need to follow along with the new words, but how to provide those to people? There are numerous pew cards out there, and the ODW has gathered all the links together for you. Several are free and printable; many are ready to be ordered. A few include the chants; plenty are text only. Some have the new words bolded; others don’t. There is a lot of variety, so you should be able to find just what you need.
Bulletin inserts
The websites linked here provide several catechetical blurbs intended for parish bulletins, which can be used free of charge.
Catechetical Resources Some of the more dramatic changes are clearly explained in the brief memos or videos linked here. This page also contains valuable suggestions for catechesis of children and teens.
Web Resources The new evangelization has made it to the internet! There are scores of resources linked here, all free, including the text of the Mass itself, a Glossary, FAQs, Bulletin Inserts, and many articles.
Print Resources Many publishers have put together excellent resources for this transition. Links are given to each publisher’s listing of new translation catechesis resources.
Music Resources Here you can find materials to go with the ICEL chants that will be in the new Missal, which the Archdiocese of Atlanta has recommended all parishes use. Here are also links to other Mass settings, including those to be used in parishes in the archdiocese. Finally, this page has a list of hymnals that have been redesigned for the new translation (and which include new Mass settings).
