About the Office of Formation and Discipleship

The Office of Formation and Discipleship facilitates the Church’s mission of evangelization for the archdiocese on behalf of the Archbishop of Atlanta.  The department consists of several specialized ministries which are interrelated.

The Church understands evangelization as living Christ’s call to “go and make disciples of all nations (Mt. 28:19).”  It consists of three essential moments – evangelization (proclamation of the Gospel), initiation (incorporation into the Body of Christ, the Church), and catechesis (the ongoing maturing in the faith).  Together, these moments engage a full, conscious, and active faith.

As a department of the curia, the Office of Formation and Discipleship has three operational lenses:

  • Animate Leadership
  • Foster Mature Discipleship
  • Promote Vibrant Communities of Faith

A primary role of the department is to ensure that parish and extra-parochial ministry arenas respond effectively to the needs of the People of God.  The Office of Formation and Discipleship takes an integrated approach to ministry that results in continuous renewal and stewardship by inviting, encouraging, and supporting pastoral frameworks which are comprehensive, systematic, lifelong, and ongoing.  Respecting and celebrating diversity is paramount as the department employs a collaborative disposition of “pastoral de conjunto.”  The department models this vision with broad and permeable initiatives in the following areas:

  • Catechetical Ministry
  • Adult Ministry
  • Young Adult Ministry
  • Youth Ministry
  • Family Ministry
  • Pastoral Care Ministry
  • Inculturation Ministry

These interrelated arenas share a support-team and are guided by the department director, who serves in the Archbishop’s Secretariat.
