Basic Certification
The minimum requirements for basic certification, as presented in Communicating the Catholic Message, 2001 edition, are as follows:
- 16 hours of study in eight basic areas of faith formation
- 8 reflection assignments
- 2 hours of spiritual enrichment
- 2 hours of observing another classroom
- Completion of methodology class requirements for one age group
- Project Aware training [n.b., PA has been replaced by Safe Environment]
CCM2001 lists the eight areas for study as: Ministry of Catechesis, Faith and Moral Development, Overview of Scripture, Morality, Church Development, What the Church Believes, Liturgy and Sacraments, and Prayer and Spirituality.
In recent years, these were reorganized to include a similar but slightly different set of eight topics: Divine Revelation, Creed, Church History, Life in Christ, the Ten Commandments, the Seven Sacraments, the Mass, and Prayer and Spirituality.
Until new guidelines are published, either set of topics or a combination thereof will be accepted toward the sixteen hours of study.
