Frequently Asked Questions

1.  What Is ACT?

Advanced Catechist Training is a series of eighteen classes that partially meets the requirements for an Advanced Catechist certificate as laid out in the Archdiocese of Atlanta’s 2001 Communicating the Catholic Message

2.  Who Can Attend ACT?

ACT classes are intended for catechists who have already completed Basic Catechist Certification (BCC) or its equivalent; however, any adult who already has basic knowledge of the Catholic Faith and wants to learn more may attend.

3.  Where Is ACT Held?

Location:  Holy Spirit Preparatory School, “The Commons” building, 2nd floor lecture theater

Details:  We have been given a warm and generous reception by Holy Spirit Preparatory School.  HSP is located at the corner of Northside Drive and Mt Paran Road, just inside the northwest corner of the perimeter.  Please enter the HSP campus via the Northside Drive entrance.  For directions to or from HSP, go to Google Maps.

Once you’re on the campus, you’ll see the parish to your left and two school buildings straight ahead.  Park in any open space.  The school building on the left is called “The Commons.”  As you approach The Commons, enter the foyer through the doors on the left side of the building.  Immediately on the right is a staircase; take that to the second floor.  (If you need assistance climbing stairs, there is an elevator just after the stairs.)  Once on the second floor, our classroom is the first on the left.

4.  When Is ACT?

Schedule:  9 am – 12 noon, two Saturdays per month, nine months per year

Details:  Classes will be three hours in length, starting at 9 am and ending at noon.  If you would like to attend daily Mass, Holy Spirit Catholic Church (on the same property as HSP) has a Saturday daily Mass in the Mary Chapel at 8:30 am.  We will have light refreshments and coffee available before class and during breaks.

We will meet two Saturdays per month for nine months.  We will take the summer months (June, July, and August) off.  We’ll meet on the first and third Saturdays, with the exceptions of January (third and fourth Saturdays) and December (first and second Saturdays).

5.  Must I Attend Every Class?

Participants may choose to come to one class or come to all, as their schedule and interest allows.

If you would like to receive the Advanced Catechist certificate at the end of the course, you must attend at least 16 of the 18 classes and write a reflection paper for the class(es) you missed.

6.  What Happens If I Miss A Class?

If you would like to receive the Advanced Catechist certificate at the end of the course, you must attend at least 16 of the 18 classes and write a reflection paper for the class(es) you missed.

It is not necessary to complete all 16-18 classes in one calendar year.  So if you must miss a class or more this year, you may be able to make it/them up the following year.

7.  What Does ACT Cover?

ACT classes cover four main topic areas: faith/creed, sacraments/liturgy, Catholic morality, and the documents of Vatican II.  Each of the eighteen classes is three hours long -- leaving time to go more in depth than basic classes, while remaining less demanding than a college course.  See the table of classes for more specific topics.

8.  Who Teaches ACT?

Some new, some old.  Some men, some women.  Some lay, some ordained.

This year in ACT, we are employing the assistance of Master Catechists in the Archdiocese to do the bulk of the teaching.  The classes will be of the same high standards ACT students have come to expect.  See the table of classes above for the teachers of each class; click on a name to read a brief biography.

9.  How Much Does ACT Cost?

Summary: $130 for entire course or $10 per class

Details:  We ask a minimal $10 per class or $130 for the entire course, to help cover the cost of hospitality, copies, and our teachers.  You may pay by check or cash at the class on Saturday.  Please make checks out to the Archdiocese of Atlanta.

10.  What Books Are Required?

The primary texts for ACT are the Bible (New American or Revised Standard Version) and the Catechism of the Catholic Church (LEV/USCC, 2nd Ed. 2000); please plan to bring your copies to each class.  Secondary texts include the documents of Vatican II, all of which are available for free download from the Vatican website: http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/index.htm.  Other texts may be suggested for individual classes.  Click on a date in the table above to view the reading list for that class.
