With regard to “annulment”, we understand it is a commonly used term for the marriage process; however, the preferred terminology is to request a “decree of invalidity”. The term “annulment” implies a marriage did not take place. It is understood that a marriage did occur. The Church process is to determine if the marriage was a valid covenant with God as understood in the Canon Law of the Church.
