Christ the Redeemer, Dawsonville
Parish History
Christ the Redeemer originated as the Dawsonville Mission, celebrating mass one a month in the Dawsonville Library. Effective March 4, 1982, it became a missionary church of Saint Luke the Evangelist in Dahlonega and Father John R. Henley began planning to have mass every Sunday. In May 1982 Reverend Jimmy Curtis, Pastor of the Dawsonville United Methodist Church, invited the mission to share his Church on Sundays.
In June of 1990, Father Henley was transferred and Father Edward A. J. Danneker became pastor. The mission finally took up residence in its own church located on Perimeter Road in Dawsonville. Parishioners converted a house purchased in 1991 into a church and it was dedicated on December 13th, 1992.
Father Danneker retired in July 2002 and Monsignor Stephen T. Churchwell was named pastor. To accommodate the growing population, land was acquired to build a new church and a groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 30, 2004. The church moved temporarily to adjacent Kilough Elementary School cafeteria while the new multipurpose church building was under construction. In October 2004, the congregation moved into the new facility designed by Bradfield Richards Rhodes & Associates, Architects, Inc.
On September 4, 2006, Christ the Redeemer was elevated to parish status by Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory. A rectory has been added with room below for Religious Education Classes for Elementary through Middle School students.
